Maximising Your NDIS Funding: Insider Tips from a Support Coordinator

Hi 😊 As a Support Coordinator, I've worked with so many NDIS participants to turn their plans into real, meaningful change in their lives. The NDIS is all about giving you choice and control, which is fantastic, and let's be honest, the rules, budgets, and recent updates (like the "In" and "Out" lists introduced in the October 2024 legislation) can feel overwhelming. It's super common for people to underuse their funding, especially with a first plan, simply because they're not sure how to line things up with their goals or where to even begin.

Don't worry, here are some practical, friendly tips to help you make the most of your plan.

1. Know Your Plan Inside Out

Your NDIS plan is more than just paperwork; it's your personal roadmap to the supports you need.

Start by getting clear on the basics:

  • How much funding (and how many hours) is allocated in each part of your plan? If it’s not obvious, reach out to the NDIA or your Support Coordinator, they're happy to help and break it down for you.

  • Prioritise what's most important right now. Which support or goal feels like the biggest win to start with? Tackle that first so you build momentum.

Quick habits that help:

  • Review your budgets regularly: Keep an eye on Core (flexible daily supports like personal care or community access), Capacity Building (skill-building like therapy, psychology, occupational therapy etc.), and Capital (one-off bigger items like mobility aids, equipment, or home mods).

Track your spending and progress Use a simple tool that works for your plan type to stay on top of things:

  • If your plan is agency-managed (NDIA-managed) or self-managed, log into my NDIS participant portal (or myplace portal if your plan is still in the older system) via myGov to view your budgets, see claims from providers, check remaining funds, and track progress.

  • If your plan is plan-managed, your plan manager usually provides their own app or online portal (often more detailed for invoices and real-time spending), but you can still check overall budgets and claims in the my NDIS/myplace participant portal.

Pair this with a basic spreadsheet, app, or even a notebook to log:

  • What supports you've used

  • How much you've spent

  • The real difference it's making (your "wins" and outcomes)

Don't forget to collect supporting evidence along the way, like reports from therapists, allied health professionals, or other medical notes. This builds strong proof for your next plan reassessment, especially important now, with the updated rules requiring clearer justification that supports are "reasonable and necessary."

This habit makes reviews smoother and helps you show exactly how your funding is helping you achieve your goals.

Pro tip: If the plan jargon feels confusing, ask your plan manager or Support Coordinator to explain it in plain English. We're here to translate!

2. Budget types at a glance

Here's a simple table to help you remember what each budget is best for:

3. Common Pitfalls and Easy Ways to Avoid Them

  • Underutilisation - Recent reports show many participants (around one in three) use less than half their funding, often due to confusion or not knowing where to start. Fix: Schedule quick quarterly check-ins with yourself (or your Support Coordinator) to review what's been spent and what's left.

  • Provider mismatches - Not every provider is the right fit. Fix: Look for specialists in your specific disability supports, read reviews, ask questions, and remember, it's 100% your choice!

  • Plan reassessment surprises - Don't wait until the last minute. Fix: Gather evidence early, therapy reports, goal trackers, photos of equipment in use, or notes on how supports help your daily life to show why you need continued funding.

4. Partner with a Support Coordinator (without giving away control)

I'm not here to take over your plan, you're always in the driver's seat! My job is to build your confidence in the decision-making process. Whether it's basic Support Connection (just linking you to services) or more Specialist Support Coordination (for complex needs or tricky issues), I'm here to help connect you to the right people, sort out problems, and celebrate your wins.

Ready to get more out of your NDIS funding? I'd love to hear about your plan goals or what's on your mind right now. What's one challenge you're facing with your plan now? Feel free to message me, let's chat and figure it out together!
